The Astor House played a significant role in Golden's history, initially intended to house visiting lawmakers when Golden was the territorial capital from 1862 to 1867. However, construction finished just as the capital moved to Denver. Throughout its history, the Astor House has undergone several transformations, functioning as a luxury hotel and later a more modest boarding house. It even gained a reputation as a place where weary travelers could enjoy a hot bath for a small fee. The building has survived multiple fires and changes in ownership, reflecting the dynamic nature of the town. In 1971, the Astor House faced demolition to make way for a parking lot. However, concerned citizens rallied together to save the landmark, forming the Golden Landmarks Association. Their efforts led to the city purchasing the building and transforming it into a museum. Today, the Astor House is home to the Foothills Art Center, hosting art exhibitions and cultural events.
