Discover more about Big Blue Bear

The Big Blue Bear, officially titled 'I See What You Mean,' is a monumental sculpture that has captured the hearts of Denver residents and tourists alike. Created by artist Lawrence Argent, the 40-foot-tall lapis lazuli blue bear is positioned outside the Colorado Convention Center, peering inquisitively through the building's glass facade. Installed in 2005 as part of the Denver Public Art Program, the Big Blue Bear was inspired by Argent's vision of sparking curiosity and wonder in passersby. He imagined what pedestrians might think as they walked by the convention center, and he felt that a curious bear would embody that exact thinking and wonderment. The sculpture is meant to evoke a dialogue between the viewer and the viewed, prompting conversations about what they are visually witnessing and sensing. The bear's striking blue color was a happy accident. Argent originally intended for the bear to reflect the natural earth tones of Colorado, but he was captivated by a blue mockup and decided to use the vibrant hue instead. The sculpture is made from fiber-reinforced polymers and concrete, weighing approximately 10,000 pounds. The bear was constructed in California in six major sections before being transported to Denver for assembly. The Big Blue Bear has become a must-see attraction in Denver, symbolizing the city's commitment to public art and its unique blend of urban life and natural surroundings. It's a playful and engaging piece that invites visitors to interact with their environment and to embrace the spirit of curiosity.
