Discover more about Dillon Pinnacles

The Dillon Pinnacles, located within Curecanti National Recreation Area in central Colorado, are a testament to the region's rich geological history. These impressive spires are composed of West Elk Breccia, a mix of solidified lava flows and fragments from ancient volcanic activity that occurred approximately 30-35 million years ago. Over time, wind, rain, and ice have sculpted the breccia, with a cap of harder Blue Mesa Tuff protecting the underlying rock and contributing to the pinnacle shapes. The Dillon Pinnacles Trail, a 3.8-mile out-and-back hike, provides visitors with an opportunity to get an up-close view of these formations. The trail starts near the north side of Middle Bridge, where US-50 crosses Blue Mesa Reservoir. As you hike, you'll ascend through sagebrush, ponderosa pine, and riparian habitats, with views of Blue Mesa Reservoir and the distant San Juan Mountains. Interpretive signs along the way offer insights into the area's geology and natural history. While Curecanti National Recreation Area is popular for boating and fishing, the Dillon Pinnacles Trail offers a scenic and easily accessible hiking option. The trail is considered moderately easy, making it suitable for beginner hikers. The panoramic views of the volcanic spires, the lake, the Gunnison River, and the San Juan Ranges in the distance make the Dillon Pinnacles a memorable destination.
