Discover more about Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site

Bent's Old Fort National Historic Site offers a captivating glimpse into the American West's vibrant past. This reconstructed 1840s adobe fort, originally built in 1833 by brothers Charles and William Bent and Ceran St. Vrain, served as a crucial trading post along the Mountain Branch of the Santa Fe Trail. For much of its 16-year history, Bent's Old Fort was the only major permanent white settlement between Missouri and the Mexican settlements. It facilitated trade between American merchants, trappers, and Southern Cheyenne and Arapaho tribes, primarily for buffalo robes. The fort also provided essential supplies, repairs, and respite for travelers, explorers, and the U.S. Army. Inside the fort's thick adobe walls, visitors can explore reconstructed rooms, including the kitchen, trade room, blacksmith's shop, and billiard room, each offering a glimpse into the daily life of the fort's inhabitants. Living history demonstrations and guided tours led by costumed interpreters bring the past to life, recreating the bustling atmosphere of this important frontier outpost. Bent's Old Fort also played a significant role in the Mexican-American War, serving as a staging ground for Colonel Stephen Watts Kearny's Army of the West in 1846. The fort was abandoned in 1849 due to disease and other factors. Today, the reconstructed fort stands as a monument to the diverse cultures and complex history of the early American West.
