Kit Carson County Carousel: A Whimsical Journey Through Time

The Kit Carson County Carousel, nestled in the eastern plains of Colorado, offers a delightful escape into a bygone era. This National Historic Landmark, also known as PTC #6, was built in 1905 by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company and was originally installed in Denver's Elitch Gardens. In 1928, the Kit Carson County Commissioners purchased the carousel for $1,200. What makes this carousel truly special is that it's the only antique carousel in America that still has its original paint on both the scenery panels and the animals. It is also the only surviving menagerie carousel made by the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, featuring a diverse collection of 46 hand-carved animals, including horses, goats, dogs, camels, a lion, a tiger, and a hippocampus. The animals are stationary, but riders spin around to the lively tunes of a fully restored 1909 Wurlitzer Monster Military Band Organ, which boasts 255 pipes, drums, and a cymbal. The carousel is housed within its original 12-sided building, constructed in 1928. The building's cupola and doors can be opened to let in the fresh Colorado air. A museum located a short distance from the carousel showcases the history of the carousel, its restoration, and the craftsmanship involved in creating and maintaining this treasure. The museum features exhibits about the Philadelphia Toboggan Company and the Wurlitzer Band Organ Company. The Kit Carson County Carousel has overcome adversity, including a theft in 1981 when several animals were stolen but later recovered. The carousel underwent a 25-year restoration project that began in 1976, ensuring its preservation for future generations. Today, visitors can experience the magic of this fully operational carousel for a small fee, making it an affordable and memorable attraction for all ages.
