The Rocky Mountain Arsenal National Wildlife Refuge, located a mere 10 miles northeast of downtown Denver, presents a compelling narrative of environmental redemption. Once a site for chemical weapons manufacturing during World War II and later a location for pesticide production, the area suffered significant contamination. However, through extensive cleanup efforts and a unique partnership between the U.S. Army, Shell Oil Company, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the site has been reborn as a flourishing wildlife sanctuary. Today, the refuge spans nearly 16,000 acres, providing a home to bison, deer, coyotes, prairie dogs, and a diverse array of bird species, including bald eagles. Visitors can explore the refuge through an 11-mile Wildlife Drive, offering opportunities to observe wildlife in their natural habitat. There are also over 20 miles of easy hiking trails that wind through grasslands, wetlands and woodlands. The Visitor Center features interactive exhibits detailing the site's history and ecological transformation. The refuge stands as a testament to the resilience of nature and the possibility of restoring damaged ecosystems. It offers a unique blend of history, conservation, and outdoor recreation, making it a worthwhile destination for tourists and locals alike. Fishing is permitted seasonally at Lake Mary and Lake Ladora. Keep in mind that visitors must stay in their vehicles when viewing bison and remain on designated trails to protect the habitat.
