The entrance to the Underground Parking Garage is on the west side of the Museum's north parking lot, by the main entrance. Additional parking is available on 22nd Avenue just north of the main lot, along Lake Avenue to the west of the Museum, and just north of the Denver Zoo in City Park. Parking costs vary.

As the Rocky Mountain region's leading resource for informal science education, the museum offers a wide array of exhibitions, programs, and activities that delve into the natural history of Colorado, Earth, and the universe. The 716,000-square-foot building houses over one million objects, including natural history and anthropological materials, as well as archival and library resources. Permanent exhibits include the Discovery Zone, a hands-on educational center for children; Egyptian Mummies, which explores ancient Egyptian civilization; Expedition Health, teaching about the human body; Gems & Minerals, showcasing colorful crystals and minerals; North American Indian Cultures, exploring the diversity of Native American groups; Prehistoric Journey, tracing the evolution of life on Earth; Space Odyssey, about the universe; and Wildlife Exhibits, displaying animal dioramas. Visitors can also enjoy temporary exhibitions, films on a giant screen, and shows at the Gates Planetarium. The museum is an independent, nonprofit institution with a large staff and volunteer base and is accredited by the American Alliance of Museums.
