Discover more about Shenipsit State Forest-Soapstone Mountain

Shenipsit State Forest, encompassing over 7,000 acres across Ellington, Somers, and Stafford, began in 1927 with the purchase of land on Soapstone Mountain. The initial intent was to erect a fire tower for forest surveillance. Today, visitors can ascend the observation tower on Soapstone Mountain, rebuilt in 2019, and enjoy panoramic views stretching from the Connecticut River Valley to the Springfield skyline. The forest's landscape is dominated by oak stands, a result of historical clear-cutting for charcoal production and fires that occurred before state ownership. These oak stands provide valuable timber and are a crucial food source for local wildlife like deer, turkey, and squirrels. History buffs can explore the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Museum, located at the Shenipsit Forest Headquarters. The museum resides in the state's last remaining CCC barracks building, paying tribute to the men who worked in Connecticut camps during the Great Depression. These “CCC Boys” were instrumental in developing many of Connecticut's state parks and forests. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy hiking along the Blue-Blazed Shenipsit Trail, which traverses Soapstone Mountain. The area also offers opportunities for mountain biking, picnicking, and exploring various trails.
