Discover more about Bushnell Park

Bushnell Park, a verdant escape in the heart of Hartford, Connecticut, holds the distinction of being the oldest publicly funded park in the United States. Its origins trace back to the mid-1850s when Reverend Horace Bushnell, recognizing the need for open public spaces, championed the idea of transforming a less desirable area into a beautiful park. Bushnell's vision was realized through a unanimous vote by the Hartford City Council in November 1853, allocating public funds to acquire the land. This marked the first time in the nation that citizens, through a popular vote, conceived, built, and paid for a municipal park. While Bushnell initially sought his friend Frederick Law Olmsted for the design, Olmsted, occupied with Central Park, recommended Jacob Weidenmann, a Swiss-born landscape architect. Weidenmann's design, implemented in 1861, featured graceful paths, clusters of trees, and enhanced the presence of the Park River. Over the years, Bushnell Park has evolved, incorporating various monuments and attractions. These include statues of notable figures like Israel Putnam and Horace Wells, the iconic Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Arch dedicated in 1886, and the Corning Fountain. A carousel, dating back to 1914, adds a touch of whimsy, while the pond, created in the 1940s and renovated in 1983, provides a tranquil focal point. Today, Bushnell Park spans 37 acres and attracts over a million visitors annually. It serves as a venue for festivals, music events, and simple relaxation. The park's paths also contribute to the East Coast Greenway, a multi-use trail stretching from Maine to Florida. With its rich history and diverse attractions, Bushnell Park offers a captivating blend of nature, history, and recreation in the heart of Hartford.
