    Discover more about MoMA PS1

MoMA PS1 is a defining force in the alternative space movement, transformed from a historic public school into a world-renowned center for artistic experimentation. Founded in 1971 by Alanna Heiss as the Institute for Art and Urban Resources Inc., its mission was to convert abandoned buildings into artist studios and exhibition spaces. The building itself, dating back to 1892 as the first school in Long Island City, adds to the unique experience. MoMA PS1 distinguishes itself through its commitment to exhibiting the most provocative and challenging works of contemporary art. The museum hosts temporary exhibitions showcasing various forms of contemporary art like painting, sculpture, video, and installations. From its inception, MoMA PS1 has championed the innovative and the experimental. The premiere exhibition, Rooms, held in June 1976, featured the works of 78 artists, many of whom created site-specific installations in the former classrooms. Visitors can explore the museum's unique, expansive galleries and experience the many performances that take place inside. The museum also hosts events such as the Sunday Sessions performance series, the Warm Up summer music series, and the Young Architects Program.
