    Discover more about Temple Emanu-El

Temple Emanu-El stands as a testament to the rich history and architectural grandeur of Reform Judaism in New York City. Founded in 1845 by a small group of German Jews, the congregation has evolved into one of the largest and most influential Reform synagogues globally. The current building, completed in 1929, is a synthesis of Byzantine and early Romanesque forms with Moorish and Art Deco ornamentation, reflecting a blend of Occidental and Oriental influences. The main sanctuary is a breathtaking space, measuring 100 feet wide, 175 feet long, and 103 feet high, accommodating up to 2,500 worshippers. The absence of interior columns provides unobstructed views of the magnificent ark, designed to resemble an open Torah scroll. The sanctuary is adorned with more than 60 stained-glass windows, including the stunning Rose Window filled with Jewish symbolism and mysticism. The mosaics, crafted by Hildreth Meière, add to the visual splendor of the space. Visitors are welcome to explore Temple Emanu-El and appreciate its architectural beauty and spiritual atmosphere. The Temple not only serves as a place of worship but also as a center for lectures, discussions, concerts, and special events, fostering a vibrant community.
