Hop Brook Lake, a serene 536-acre retreat in southwestern Connecticut, spans the communities of Middlebury, Naugatuck, and Waterbury. Created by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in 1968, the lake and surrounding area serve as a flood control project and a recreational destination. The construction of the Hop Brook Dam was initiated in response to the devastating floods of 1955, which had caused significant damage throughout the Naugatuck River Valley. Today, Hop Brook Lake is a popular spot for outdoor enthusiasts. Visitors can explore over seven miles of hiking trails that wind through diverse terrain. The trails are also suitable for mountain biking, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. The 21-acre lake welcomes canoes, kayaks, and rowboats, offering a peaceful experience on the water. Anglers can enjoy fishing in the lake and its feeder streams, which are stocked with trout. Largemouth bass and panfish are also present. The recreation area includes picnic tables and grills available on a first-come, first-served basis. Four picnic shelters are available for reservation, equipped with electrical outlets. Other amenities include a ball field, volleyball courts, and horseshoe pits.
