    Discover more about Verdi Square

Verdi Square, a 0.1-acre park located on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, provides a serene retreat from the city's frenetic pace. Bounded by 72nd and 73rd Streets, Broadway, and Amsterdam Avenue, its unusual shape is a result of Broadway's diagonal path relative to Manhattan's street grid. Named in 1921 for the celebrated Italian opera composer Giuseppe Verdi, the square has been a gathering place for musicians and residents alike. In the early 1900s, famed musicians like Enrico Caruso and Arturo Toscanini frequented the park. The park's history stretches back to 1887 when it was acquired by NYC Parks and was part of the village of Harsenville. The eastern half of Verdi Square is home to the Verdi Monument, created by Sicilian sculptor Pasquale Civiletti in 1906. The monument features a statue of Verdi atop a dark-granite pedestal, surrounded by statues of four characters from his operas: Aida, Otello, Leonora of La forza del destino, and Falstaff. The western half includes a head house entrance to the 72nd Street subway station. Verdi Square has undergone several transformations throughout its history. In the 1960s and 70s, it gained notoriety as "Needle Park". However, it has since been revitalized, with a monument restoration in the late 1980s and a significant expansion in 2003 during the 72nd Street subway station renovation. Today, Verdi Square is a designated New York City scenic landmark, maintained by the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation.
