Getting there

Car

From Liberia International Airport (LIR), the drive to Salinas Bay is approximately 1.5 hours. Rent a car at the airport and take Highway 1 towards La Cruz. From La Cruz, follow the signs to Salinas Bay. Be aware that some roads may be narrow and winding, especially during the rainy season. A 4x4 vehicle is recommended but not required. Parking is generally available near the beaches. Car rentals at Liberia Airport can range from $30-$75 per day depending on the vehicle type and rental company.

Shuttle

Private shuttle services are available from Liberia International Airport (LIR) to Salinas Bay. Pre-booking is recommended to ensure availability. The journey takes around 1.5 hours. Shuttle services typically cost between $80-$150 for a private van, accommodating up to 6 passengers.

Public Transport

From Liberia, take a bus to La Cruz. Buses leave frequently from the Liberia bus terminal. In La Cruz, transfer to a local bus heading to El Jobo, which passes through Salinas Bay. Buses to El Jobo run approximately three times daily. The bus fare from Liberia to La Cruz is approximately $2-$3, and the fare from La Cruz to El Jobo is around $1-$2. Be prepared for a longer travel time and limited service.

Overview

Salinas Bay, or Bahía Salinas, is located in the far northwestern corner of Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica, close to the Nicaraguan border. This remote bay is blessed with nearly constant winds from November to May, making it a prime destination for wind and kite surfing. The steady 25 mph winds and flat waters create ideal conditions for water sports enthusiasts.Beyond the thrill of wind and waves, Salinas Bay offers a tranquil escape with scenic bay views and untouched beaches. The turquoise waters teem with marine life, including turtles, dolphins, and various fish species. Bird-lovers can explore Isla Bolaños National Wildlife Refuge, a unique bird sanctuary home to seabirds like Brown Pelicans and Frigatebirds. The island is accessible by boat and open to visitors from April to November.Nearby, Santa Rosa National Park offers over 500 square kilometers of protected tropical dry forest, home to over 250 native bird species. Visitors can also explore the park's historical war museum and remote beaches like Playa Naranjo. Other activities in the Salinas Bay area include kayaking, mountain biking, sunset boat tours, and fishing. Several crescent-shaped beaches offer respite from the wind, perfect for sunbathing and relaxation. The bay's proximity to Nicaragua also makes it a convenient starting point for day trips to cities like Granada and San Juan del Sur.
