Discover more about St. Paul's Cathedral

St. Paul's Cathedral (Cathédrale Saint-Paul d'Abidjan) is a captivating Roman Catholic cathedral that stands as a symbol of Abidjan. Designed by Italian architect Aldo Spirito, the cathedral was commissioned by Côte d'Ivoire's first President, Félix Houphouët-Boigny, with the vision of creating a world-class religious monument. Consecrated by Pope John Paul II in 1985, it serves as the mother church for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Abidjan. The cathedral's architecture is both unique and modern, reflecting the aspirations of the Ivorian people. The exterior features a winged cross held in place by seven cables anchored to the triangular main building, creating the illusion that the structure is being drawn towards the Ébrié Lagoon. The towering bell tower reaches a height of 70 meters, dominating the city's skyline. Climbing the 230 steps to the balconies in the arms of the cross rewards visitors with panoramic views of Abidjan. Inside, the cathedral boasts six stained-glass windows covering 370 square meters, also designed by Aldo Spirito. These windows, along with paintings of the Virtues, mosaics of the Sacraments, and twelve polychrome ceramic panels, depict biblical stories with a focus on Ivorian people, landscapes, and culture. The cathedral can accommodate up to 5,000 people, with seating for 3,500. St. Paul's Cathedral has not only served as a place of worship but also as a sanctuary during times of crisis. During the 2010-2011 Ivorian crisis, it provided refuge for approximately 1,800 people fleeing violence. A visit to St. Paul's Cathedral offers a unique experience, blending traditional African beliefs with modern architectural aesthetics.
