Discover more about Plateau Mosque

The Plateau Mosque, officially known as Grande Mosquée du Plateau, is a significant religious and architectural landmark in the heart of Abidjan. Located in the bustling Plateau district, the mosque stands as a testament to the city's religious diversity and the importance of Islam in the community. The mosque's construction began in 1996, with the first stone laid in 1994 by President Henri Konan Bédié. However, the project faced numerous delays and was suspended for 18 years due to financial constraints and political instability. Construction was revived in 2007 thanks to a donation from Saudi Arabia. The mosque can accommodate 6,500 worshippers, with 3,500 on the esplanade and 3,000 in the prayer hall. The Plateau Mosque boasts a contemporary design, characterized by its elegant domes, geometric patterns, and a towering 65-meter minaret that dominates the Abidjan skyline. The mosque complex includes a number of facilities spread across four levels, including twenty offices, shops, a library, an amphitheater with 300 seats, and a mortuary room. A mezzanine provides space for 500 women. Visitors are welcome to admire the mosque's exterior and soak in the peaceful ambiance of its surroundings. While non-Muslims may not be permitted inside during prayer times, the mosque's architectural splendor and cultural significance make it a worthwhile attraction. Modest attire is recommended when visiting the mosque to show respect for local customs.
