Discover more about Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb

The Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, or HNK Zagreb, is more than just a performance venue; it's a symbol of Croatian national identity and a stunning example of neo-Baroque architecture. Established in 1860, the theatre moved to its current location on Republic of Croatia Square in 1895, with Austro-Hungarian Emperor Franz Joseph I attending the opening. Designed by famed Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Herman Helmer, the building itself is a work of art, featuring a symmetrical facade adorned with sculptures, intricate reliefs, and decorative motifs. Inside, visitors are greeted by a lavish foyer with marble staircases, ornate chandeliers, and exquisite frescoes. The main auditorium, with its crimson velvet seats and gilded embellishments, provides an intimate and grand setting for performances. The theatre has three ensembles: drama (founded in 1860), opera (established in 1870), and ballet (formed in 1894). The repertoire includes world and Croatian classics, as well as contemporary works. At the entrance of the theatre, you'll find the Well of Life (Zdenac Života), a wall fountain and sculpture designed by Croatian artist Ivan Meštrović in 1905. Busts of important Croatian poets and a composer guard the exterior. The ceiling of the auditorium features paintings by Viennese painter Alexander Demetrius Goltz, while the foyer ceiling was later decorated by Ivan Tišov in 1911. The impressive curtain from 1895, named "The Reformation of Croatian Literature and Art", is by painter Vlaho Bukovac.
