Castle Tikves: A Habsburg Hunting Retreat in Kopacki Rit

Castle Tikves, located in the heart of the Kopacki Rit Nature Park near the village of Lug, offers a unique blend of history and nature. Built in the 19th century by the Teschen line of the Habsburg family, this complex served as a hunting center for European nobility. The castle's architecture reflects a Romantic Historicism style, complemented by surrounding parks and promenades.Throughout its history, Castle Tikves has hosted notable figures, including members of the Habsburg and Karađorđević dynasties. After World War II, it became one of President Josip Broz Tito's residences, welcoming numerous world politicians during hunting visits. Today, the castle has been transformed into the Tikves Presentation and Education Center, aiming to educate visitors about the natural characteristics of Kopacki Rit and the importance of its preservation.The castle complex consists of several buildings, including the New Castle, the Old Castle, a chapel, and other facilities, all set within a forest-park. Visitors can explore the castle's grounds and learn about the region's diverse ecosystem. Kopacki Rit itself is one of the largest and most important wetlands in Europe, home to over 2700 species. The park offers various activities such as birdwatching, boat tours, and hiking along wooden trails.
