Discover more about Cathedral of Zagreb

The Cathedral of Zagreb, officially the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saints Stephen and Ladislaus, is the most monumental sacral building of Gothic architecture southeast of the Alps. Its origins trace back to 1094 when King Ladislaus I of Hungary established the bishopric of Zagreb. The initial Romanesque-style church was destroyed in 1242 during the Mongol invasion. Reconstruction began in the late 13th century, giving it a Gothic form. Over the centuries, the cathedral has undergone numerous modifications, with a significant transformation in the Neo-Gothic style led by architect Hermann Bollé after the devastating 1880 earthquake. This reconstruction included the addition of the iconic twin spires, which reach 108 meters (354 feet), making the Cathedral the tallest building in Croatia. The cathedral suffered damage in the 2020 earthquake, and restoration efforts are ongoing. Inside, visitors can admire the vaulted ceilings, stained-glass windows, and marble altars. The sacristy, built in a transitional Romanesque-Gothic style, features ribbed vaults and 13th-century frescoes. The cathedral also houses the tomb of Blessed Cardinal Alojzije Stepinac, a revered figure in Croatian history. The Cathedral's organ is considered one of the top ten finest in the world.
