Fortress of Petar Hektorović: A Renaissance Microcosm

The Fortress of Petar Hektorović, also known as Tvrdalj, is a remarkable historical site in Stari Grad, Hvar, embodying the vision of the Renaissance poet, Petar Hektorović. Built during the 16th century, this fortified summer residence served as a sanctuary and a realization of Hektorović's ideal world. Tvrdalj is more than just a fortress; it's a microcosm designed to house all of God's creatures in harmony. The structure uniquely integrates a fishpond inhabited by grey mullet, a dovecote, and meticulously kept gardens. These elements reflect Hektorović's belief in the interconnectedness of nature and humanity. The fishpond, likely originating from an ancient pool or maritime structure, is a central feature, surrounded by a courtyard. Above it, a tower rises with stone dovecotes, providing shelter for birds. The fortress is adorned with numerous inscriptions in Latin, Croatian, and Italian, reflecting Hektorović's humanist ideals and moralistic views. These inscriptions, carved into the stone walls, offer insights into the poet's philosophy and his dedication to the Creator. One inscription above the entrance suggests that Hektorović built Tvrdalj for himself and his friends, while others indicate hospitality was extended to travelers and the poor. In the western wing, an ethnographic collection showcases objects from everyday island life, particularly those related to agriculture, winemaking, and olive cultivation. This collection, formed in 1964, provides a glimpse into the daily life of the islanders during Hektorović's time.
