Discover more about Hvar Theatre

Hvar Theatre, also known as the Hvar Public Theatre, holds a significant place in European history as one of the oldest public theaters. Established in 1612, it offered a unique space where citizens of all social classes could gather and enjoy performances, a concept revolutionary for its time. The theater is located on the second floor of the Arsenal building, which itself has a rich history, having served as a galley shipyard as early as the 13th century. Over the centuries, the theater has undergone several renovations, resulting in a blend of architectural styles. While the original 17th-century interior has not been preserved, the auditorium with loges was added in 1803, and the current neo-Baroque appearance dates back to the turn of the 20th century. Visitors can still admire preserved frescoes, including one from 1819 on the back wall of the stage and another depicting the Governor's Palace, created around 1900. Today, the Hvar Theatre continues to be a cultural landmark, hosting various events and performances. Though currently undergoing restoration, it remains open to visitors who wish to explore its historic interior and learn about its fascinating past. The theater's location on Trg Svetog Stjepana (St. Stephen's Square) places it at the heart of Hvar's social and cultural life, making it an essential stop for anyone exploring the island.
