History and Heritage
The Damjanić winery traces its roots to the early 18th century when the Jurković family first planted vineyards in Fuškulin, between Poreč and Limski Kanal. This ancient viticultural area has shaped generations. Ivan Damjanić, the current enologist, revived the family legacy started by his grandfathers 200 years ago. After years in modest conditions, the winery opened a state-of-the-art facility in 2023, blending tradition with modern technology.
Vineyards and Grape Varieties
Spanning 8.5 hectares, the vineyards thrive in Istria's mineral-rich soils, ideal for native grapes. Malvazija Istarska dominates, producing crisp, aromatic whites with peach, apricot, and floral notes. Rare varieties like Borgonja and Duranja add depth, while Teran brings bold reds. Premium lines include Clemente Blanc and Red blends, alongside the characterful Duro Istriano, echoing a 1928 award-winning recipe.
Wine Production and Tastings
Ivan and his wife Željka oversee production of 10-12 labels, yielding 70,000-90,000 bottles annually. Wines age in stainless steel, oak, and acacia, preserving varietal purity. Visitors enjoy tastings of four to six wines—such as sparkling Virtu Brut, fresh Malvazija, fruity Borgonja, and complex orange wines—paired with Istrian prosciutto, cheeses, sausages, bread, and olive oil. The experience highlights the winery's 'young guns' status and authentic hospitality.
Visiting the Winery
Located at Fuškulin 99, the modern tasting room offers stunning views over vineyards. Open daily from 11am, with extended hours on weekends. Cycle or drive the scenic 10-15km from Poreč via coastal paths and dirt roads. Purchase bottles, including award-winners, and explore olive oil. It's a serene escape embodying Istrian passion for wine and land.
