Discover more about Medvedgrad

Medvedgrad, a majestic medieval fortress, has watched over Zagreb for eight centuries from its strategic perch on the southern slopes of Medvednica Mountain. Built in 1254 following the devastating Tatar invasions, it was commissioned by Pope Innocent IV to protect the city's inhabitants and treasures. The castle's double walls, towers, and strategic location made it a formidable defensive structure; however, it was never attacked. Throughout its history, Medvedgrad has been under the control of various lords, including Croatian-Hungarian kings, bishops, and noble families. Legends swirl around the castle, particularly those of the Black Queen, Barbara of Celje, known for terrorizing the local population. Abandoned after a devastating earthquake in 1590, Medvedgrad fell into disrepair until archaeological research began in 1979. Today, Medvedgrad has been partially reconstructed, featuring the octagonal Chapel of St. Philip and Jacob, the south defensive tower, and the Homeland Altar, a monument honoring Croatian heroes. Visitors can explore the castle walls, enjoy stunning views of Zagreb, and delve into the rich history of the region. In the summer, Medvedgrad hosts music evenings, offering concerts under the stars with the city lights as a backdrop. The Medvedgrad Visitor Centre offers exhibitions and activities detailing the castle's history and the natural wonders of Medvednica Mountain.
