    From Rijeka's city center, begin at Titov Trg (Tito's Square) and head northwest towards the Petar Kružić stairway. The stairway consists of 561 steps leading directly to the monastery. Alternatively, walk along Ulica Franje Račkoga for a less strenuous route with views. Allow approximately 20 minutes to walk to the monastery, with an elevation gain of about 368 feet (112 m). There are four chapels on the way up the stairs.

Founded in the 13th century, the monastery is linked to the legend of the Holy House of Nazareth, said to have been transported by angels to Trsat before its final relocation to Loreto, Italy. This connection has established Trsat as a key pilgrimage site, known as the 'Croatian Nazareth'.The monastery's history is intertwined with the Frankopan family, who initiated the construction of the Church of Our Lady in the 15th century. Over the centuries, the church and monastery have undergone several renovations, most notably in the Baroque style after a fire in 1629. The monastery also houses a museum with religious artifacts, historical manuscripts, and artistic treasures.The Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat is the largest pilgrimage center of Western Croatia. The site also includes the Marian Park and a statue of Pope John Paul II, who visited in 2003. From the monastery, visitors can enjoy views of Rijeka and the Kvarner Gulf.
