Franciscan Monastery Trsat: A Sanctuary Above Rijeka

The Franciscan Monastery Trsat, located on Trsat hill in Rijeka, offers visitors a serene escape with panoramic views of the city and Kvarner Bay. Founded in the 13th century, the monastery is linked to the legend of the Holy House of Nazareth, said to have been transported by angels to Trsat before its final relocation to Loreto, Italy. This connection has established Trsat as a key pilgrimage site, known as the 'Croatian Nazareth'.The monastery's history is intertwined with the Frankopan family, who initiated the construction of the Church of Our Lady in the 15th century. Over the centuries, the church and monastery have undergone several renovations, most notably in the Baroque style after a fire in 1629. Today, visitors can explore the beautifully maintained grounds, admire religious art and artifacts, and visit the chapel, known for its exquisite craftsmanship. The monastery also houses a museum with religious artifacts, historical manuscripts, and artistic treasures.The Shrine of Our Lady of Trsat is the largest pilgrimage center of Western Croatia. The monastery's large cloister features frescoes by Serafin Schön, and the Chapel of Votive Gifts displays tokens of gratitude from pilgrims. The site also includes the Marian Park and a statue of Pope John Paul II, who visited in 2003. From the monastery, visitors can enjoy views of Rijeka and the Kvarner Gulf.
