Discover more about Kozjak

Kozjak Lake, situated within Plitvice Lakes National Park, is the largest and deepest of the Plitvice Lakes, with a surface area of 82 hectares and a depth of 47 meters. It is positioned at an altitude of 534 meters. The lake serves as a natural border between the Upper and Lower Lakes, adding to its significance within the park's ecosystem. Kozjak's formation is a fascinating story in itself. Originally, two separate lakes occupied the space where Kozjak now lies. Over time, a natural dam, known as a tufa barrier, which separated the two lakes, submerged approximately 400 years ago. This created the single, unified lake that visitors see today. The submerged barrier is still visible from the panoramic boat on sunny days as a white obstacle in the dark blue depths. The lake is also the only lake within the Plitvice system to contain an island, Štefanija's Island. Visitors can take a boat ride to see the island and the rest of the lake. The lake's depth contributes to its dark green/turquoise color. According to legend, the lake was named after goats who were chased by wolves and lost around the lake.
