History of Bacvice

From Coastal Margin to Bathing Quarter

Bačvice developed as Split expanded beyond its medieval core and eastern waterfront. The shallow bay made the coast suitable for bathing, while its proximity to the city encouraged the growth of villas, promenades and leisure facilities in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Rather than functioning as an isolated resort, the area became an urban beach quarter: close enough for residents to reach on foot, but sufficiently open to offer sea air and recreation. The streets and buildings behind the shore still reflect this transition from peripheral coastline to desirable residential and bathing district.

The Rise of Hotel Park

The opening of Hotel Park in 1921 marked Bačvice’s emergence as one of Split’s established seaside addresses. Its position above the bay connected the neighbourhood’s beach culture with the more formal hospitality associated with interwar tourism. The hotel and surrounding villas helped shape the architectural character of the waterfront, where landscaped approaches and residential buildings stood alongside public bathing areas. Bačvice therefore developed a layered identity early on: part local recreation ground, part hotel quarter and part settled residential neighbourhood.

Picigin Becomes a Local Tradition

Bačvice is closely associated with picigin, a non-competitive ball game played in the sea’s unusually shallow water. The tradition emerged in the early twentieth century and became embedded in local beach life, with players using acrobatic jumps and improvised techniques to keep a small ball in the air. Its importance lies less in formal competition than in the way it connects spectators, regular players and generations of residents. Picigin has become one of the clearest cultural markers of Bačvice, distinguishing the beach from an ordinary swimming area.
