Discover more about Stari Grad Plain

Stari Grad Plain, also known as Hora or Ager, is a remarkably well-preserved agricultural landscape on the island of Hvar, Croatia. Established in the 4th century BC by Ionian Greeks from the island of Paros, the plain showcases an ancient system of land use that has persisted for over two millennia. The landscape is characterized by its original geometric division of land into parcels (chora), bordered by dry stone walls, and includes small stone shelters called trims. The plain's fertile land, the largest agricultural area on the Adriatic islands, continues to be used for growing the same crops introduced by the Greeks: primarily grapes and olives. This unbroken continuity of agricultural practice offers a unique insight into ancient Greek farming methods. The site also features a rainwater recovery system, including tanks and gutters, demonstrating the ingenuity of the original settlers in managing the dry Mediterranean climate. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2008, Stari Grad Plain stands as a testament to the enduring legacy of ancient Greek civilization and its sustainable agricultural practices. Visitors can explore the plain by foot, bicycle or car, discovering ancient pathways, archaeological sites, and local producers offering wine and olive oil tastings. The plain connects the town of Stari Grad with the settlements of Vrboska and Jelsa, offering a tranquil escape into a landscape shaped by centuries of human endeavor.
