Discover more about Landhuis Choloma ruins

Landhuis Choloma, a striking heritage building in Curaçao, provides visitors with a tangible link to the island's colonial history. Constructed in the 18th century, between 1893 and 1896, this former plantation house exemplifies the architecture of the time, boasting a sprawling layout and distinctive design elements. The name 'Choloma' is believed to have originated from the indigenous people of Curaçao. The first owners of the landhuis were freed slaves. Today, Landhuis Choloma exists as ruins, yet its crumbling walls and surviving architectural details tell stories of a bygone era. The ocher-colored landhuis has a core with galleries on both long sides. The galleries are not the same length: the gallery on the south side is shorter than the other. The core and the galleries also have a gable roof with red roof tiles. Above the facade is a plastered image of a dove, an ornament of high architectural-historical value. Visitors can wander through the grounds, observing the blending of European and Caribbean influences in the remaining structures. The site includes a round well, water reservoir, and a magasina with stable. Landhuis Choloma is located southwest of Curaçao. Nearby are two other monumental land houses: Landhuis Groot Sint Joris and Landhuis Klein Sint Joris. Landhuis Groot Sint Joris is northeast of Landhuis Choloma and Landhuis Klein Sint Joris is southeast of Landhuis Choloma.
