Discover more about Landhuis Habaai

Landhuis Habaai, originally known as Plantation Welgelegen, is one of Curaçao's oldest and most stunning plantation houses, dating back to around 1752. This historic manor reflects a blend of Dutch colonial and Caribbean architectural styles, characterized by its two-story structure, galleries, and baroque side facades. Throughout its history, Landhuis Habaai has served various purposes. Initially, it was a diversified plantation with farming and cattle. Later, it became a country residence for governors. In 1864, the Roman Catholic Church acquired the property and transformed it into a boarding house for girls from affluent families and later an orphanage. The northeast wing, which has since collapsed, was added during this period. Notably, around the start of the 20th century, Landhuis Habaai was renowned for its straw hat production. In 2005, Lusette and Herman Verboom bought Landhuis Habaai and began an extensive restoration, transforming it into a cultural hub. Today, Landhuis Habaai houses Gallery Alma Blou, the oldest and largest art gallery on Curaçao, featuring local and Caribbean art. Visitors can admire paintings, sculptures, ceramics, jewelry, and dolls, and explore the sculpture garden. The gallery also offers an online platform for buying and selling artwork. The terrace hosts cultural events such as concerts, book readings, and receptions.
