Bolo di Batrei, located at 77 Scharlooweg in Willemstad, Curaçao, is more than just a government office; it's a symbol of the island's rich history and architectural evolution. Situated in the heart of the Scharloo district, this building, whose name translates to "Wedding Cake" in Papiamento, stands as a testament to Curaçao's vibrant past. Scharloo itself began as a plantation in 1634 but later transformed into a wealthy neighborhood from 1850 onwards, particularly after the city walls were demolished in 1861. Wealthy Jewish merchants constructed luxurious villas, with Scharlooweg becoming the main street adorned with the grandest of these. Bolo di Batrei is the most famous building on this street. The original building was replaced in 1917 by Elias Salomon Levy Maduro for his daughter's wedding, with elaborate painted ceilings. The building was gifted to the newly weds on their wedding day. Today, Bolo di Batrei houses the National Archive of Curaçao. While the interior is not generally open for public tours, its exterior is a captivating sight, embodying the spirit of Curaçao with its blend of beauty and historical significance.
