    Discover more about Fort Beekenburg

Fort Beekenburg, perched on the Caracasbaai Peninsula, is a historical landmark that offers visitors a unique window into Curaçao's past. Built in 1703, the fort was commissioned by Governor Nicolaas van Beek to protect the strategic Spanish Water bay from invaders. Caracas Bay was one of the few locations where enemies could easily land and attempt to capture Willemstad. The fort's construction is notable for its use of stones brought from the Netherlands as ballast in ships. These stones were then exchanged for goods upon arrival in Curaçao. Throughout the 18th century, Fort Beekenburg successfully repelled attacks by the English, French, and pirates. Although the English occupied Curaçao twice, they were never able to take the fort. The fort features a distinctive round tower, resembling a chess rook, with evenly spaced openings for cannons. A stone staircase leads to a hexagonal platform with battlements, offering stunning views of the Spanish Water. The tower also has channels to collect rainwater, which was stored in an interior reservoir. From 1927 to 2005, the area surrounding the fort was owned by Shell, making it inaccessible to the public. After the land was sold to the Antillean government, the fort was reopened and is now freely accessible. Today, visitors can explore the fort, climb to the top of the tower, and enjoy the panoramic views.
