Discover more about Curaçao Liqueur Distillery

Nestled within the walls of Landhuis Chobolobo, a beautifully preserved 19th-century country estate, the Curaçao Liqueur Distillery offers a captivating journey into the heart of Curaçao's most famous export. More than just a distillery, it's a living museum where visitors can witness the time-honored traditions behind the creation of the iconic Curaçao Liqueur. The story begins with the Laraha citrus fruit, a bitter orange unique to the island. Spanish explorers brought Seville oranges in 1527, but the harsh climate transformed them into the Laraha. While the fruit itself is unpalatable, its aromatic peels hold the secret to Curaçao Liqueur's distinctive flavor. The distillery meticulously harvests and dries these peels, then uses them in a secret distillation process that has been passed down through generations. Founded in 1896, Senior & Co. is the only company that has always produced its liqueur from the peels of the Laraha from Curaçao. The family, Senior and Chumaceiro, started selling their liqueur in their pharmacy in small quantities. In 1947 they bought the landhuis Chobolobo in Willemstad, where the distillery has since been housed. The company states that it is the only one that uses native laraha fruit, and label it Genuine Curaçao Liqueur. Stepping into Landhuis Chobolobo is like stepping back in time. The estate's architecture reflects the island's Dutch colonial past, with its vibrant colors and charming courtyard.
