Discover more about Den Paradera Herb Garden Curaçao by Dinah Veeris

Den Paradera Herb Garden, a hidden gem on the eastern side of Curaçao, offers a captivating journey into the world of traditional herbal medicine and the island's rich cultural heritage. Founded in 1991 by Dinah Veeris, a passionate herbalist and educator, the garden has become a sanctuary for both indigenous plants and the preservation of ancestral knowledge. Dinah Veeris's vision for Den Paradera stemmed from a deep concern for the fading traditions of herbal healing in Curaçao. Inspired by her mother and other local elders, she embarked on a mission to document and preserve the medicinal uses of plants that had been passed down through generations. Her dedication led her to interview countless elders, collect plant species from across the ABC islands (Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao), and establish a garden where these traditions could thrive. The name "Den Paradera" itself carries historical significance. It originates from the Paraguiri Indians, who once cultivated the largest herb garden on the island. When the Spanish arrived, they brought their ailing slaves to this garden for healing, referring to the location as "En Paradera." Over time, the local population transformed the name to "Den Paradera," meaning "the place where you feel at home." Today, Den Paradera encompasses three distinct sections: the botanical garden, the historical garden, and the production area. The botanical garden is a vibrant tapestry of over 300 plant species, each carefully labeled with its local name, medicinal properties, and traditional uses. Visitors can wander through winding paths, inhaling the aromatic scents of herbs like basil, oregano, and black sage, while admiring the unique beauty of native flora such as the Kadushi cactus and the Divi-divi tree. The historical garden provides a glimpse into the past, showcasing vintage gardening tools and equipment that were used in traditional Curaçaoan agriculture. This section serves as a reminder of the island's agricultural roots and the ingenuity of its people in utilizing natural resources. The production area is where Dinah and her team create a range of 100% natural herbal products, including creams, teas, shampoos, and remedies. Visitors can witness the production process firsthand and learn about the traditional methods used to extract the healing properties of the plants. The on-site shop offers a variety of these products for purchase, allowing visitors to take a piece of Den Paradera's healing power home with them. More than just a garden, Den Paradera is an educational resource and a cultural center. Dinah Veeris and her staff offer guided tours that provide in-depth knowledge about the plants, their uses, and the history of herbal medicine in Curaçao. These tours are not only informative but also deeply personal, as Dinah shares stories and wisdom passed down through generations. Den Paradera also serves as a gathering place for the community, hosting workshops, events, and celebrations that promote traditional knowledge and cultural exchange. It is a place where people can connect with nature, learn about their heritage, and find healing in the power of plants. Visiting Den Paradera is an immersive experience that engages all the senses. The vibrant colors of the flowers, the fragrant aromas of the herbs, the soothing sounds of nature, and the warmth of Dinah's hospitality create a truly unforgettable experience. It is a place where visitors can slow down, reconnect with nature, and discover the healing power of plants. Den Paradera faces challenges, including the effects of climate change, such as prolonged drought and heavy rainfall, which have damaged some of the herbs and infrastructure. Despite these challenges, Dinah Veeris remains committed to preserving and sharing her knowledge, ensuring that the traditions of herbal medicine continue to thrive in Curaçao. Whether you are a nature enthusiast, a culinary explorer, or simply seeking a tranquil escape, Den Paradera Herb Garden offers an enriching experience that highlights the beauty and importance of Curaçao's natural environment and cultural heritage. It is a place where you can feel at home, connect with the past, and discover the healing power of nature.
