Avakas Gorge, situated on the Akamas Peninsula near Paphos, is a breathtaking testament to the power of nature. Over countless millennia, the Avgas River has carved a deep ravine through the soft limestone bedrock, creating a dramatic canyon with towering cliffs and unique geological formations. The gorge's geology tells a fascinating story etched in stone. The cliffs, composed of chalk, marl, and reef limestone, reveal layers of Earth's history dating back millions of years. Some sections of the gorge reach up to 30 meters (98 feet) in height, with walls so close together they almost touch. Massive boulders are precariously wedged between the cliffs, forming natural tunnels and bridges. The unique microclimate within the gorge supports a diverse range of plant species. Wild fig trees, oleanders, ferns, junipers, pines, cypresses and the rare Akamas centaury (Centaurea akamantis), found nowhere else on Earth, thrive here. The interplay of sunlight and shadow, combined with the lush vegetation, creates a visually stunning landscape. The gorge is also home to various animal species, including foxes, hares, hedgehogs, reptiles, and birds such as the Cyprus wheatear and Cyprus warbler.Archaeological evidence suggests the area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with ancient communities drawn to the fertile land and abundant water resources. The gorge has also served as a refuge for locals during times of conflict. The Avakas Gorge Nature Trail stretches approximately 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) one way, with varying difficulty. The first part of the hike is accessible, but the terrain becomes more challenging inside the gorge, with rocky paths and narrow passages. Waterproof hiking shoes are essential.
