Discover more about Avakas Gorge Nature Trail

Avakas Gorge, a breathtaking natural wonder, is located on the western coast of Cyprus, within the Akamas Peninsula near Paphos. This dramatic gorge has been sculpted over countless millennia by the erosive forces of the Avgas River, carving a deep ravine through the soft limestone bedrock. The result is a stunning canyon characterized by towering cliffs, unique geological formations, and a rich tapestry of plant and animal life. The gorge's geology tells a fascinating story etched in stone. The cliffs, composed of chalks, marls, and reef limestone, reveal layers of Earth's history, dating back millions of years. The towering walls, in some places reaching heights of 30 meters (98 feet), create a narrow, cathedral-like atmosphere, casting cool shadows and fostering a unique microclimate. This environment supports a diverse range of plant species, including wild fig trees, oleanders, ferns, and the rare Akamas centaury, a plant found nowhere else on Earth. The Avakas Gorge is more than just a pretty picture; it's a haven for wildlife. Keep an eye out for foxes, hares, hedgehogs, and various bird species, including the endemic Cyprus wheatear and Cyprus warbler. Reptiles, such as the Stellion lizard, also call the gorge home, as do amphibians like the marsh frog and tree frog. Lucky visitors might even spot the elusive Cyprus mouflon, a wild sheep native to the island. Hiking through the Avakas Gorge is an adventure in itself. The trail follows the course of the Avgas River, winding through the heart of the canyon. The terrain varies from relatively easy paths to more challenging sections that require scrambling over rocks and navigating narrow passages. Waterproof shoes are recommended, as you'll likely be wading through shallow streams at times. The hike typically takes around 2-3 hours to complete, depending on your pace and how far you choose to venture.
