Located on the western side of Namık Kemal Square in Famagusta, the Palazzo del Provveditore, also known as the Venetian Palace, offers a window into the city's past. Constructed by the Venetians around 1550, the palace replaced a royal palace from the Lusignan era that was destroyed by an earthquake. The Palazzo served as the residence and administrative hub for the Venetian governors (provveditori) during their rule of Famagusta from 1489 to 1571. During the Venetian period, Famagusta was transformed from a medieval French city into an Italian Renaissance city, becoming the capital of Cyprus. The palace's architecture reflected this shift, showcasing distinct Venetian features and grandeur. However, the Palazzo suffered significant damage during the Ottoman siege of Famagusta in 1571. Today, visitors can still witness the remnants of this historical landmark. The facade, adorned with three arches incorporating Roman columns brought from Salamis, has survived. The upper part of the gate mimics Greek temples, and above the central arch, the coat of arms of Giovanni Renier, Captain of the Army of Cyprus in 1552, can be seen. A western wing, built in the style of an Italian palazzo, also remains. Additionally, a monument to the Turkish poet Namık Kemal Bey, who was once imprisoned here, stands among the trees.
