Profitis Ilias Church, a treasured Greek Orthodox church, graces a rocky hilltop 1.5 km northwest of Protaras, Cyprus. Rising more than 100 meters above the town, this prominent landmark offers breathtaking panoramic views of Protaras and the surrounding coastline, stretching from Cape Greco to Kapparis and even Famagusta on a clear day. The church, constructed in 1984 using local stone, stands as a replica of a former temple that existed as early as the 14th century. Dedicated to Prophet Elijah (Elias), it attracts hundreds of devout Greek Orthodox pilgrims every year on his feast day, July 20th, when a religious service is held in his honor. Visitors can ascend over 150 stone steps to reach the church. Along the way, they may notice trees adorned with colorful ribbons, a local tradition where each ribbon represents a heartfelt memory or wish. This act of tying a ribbon weaves personal stories into the rich cultural fabric of Cyprus. Inside, the church is decorated with colorful murals depicting Orthodox saints and biblical scenes.
