Discover more about Troodos Botanical Garden

The Troodos Botanical Garden, officially named the Troodos Botanical Garden “A.G. Leventis,” offers a tranquil escape into the heart of Cyprus's natural beauty. Situated within the Troodos National Forest Park, near the village of Pano Amiantos, this garden sits at an elevation of 1,400 meters, providing a refreshing mountain atmosphere. The garden is dedicated to preserving and showcasing the rich botanical heritage of Cyprus, with a particular emphasis on the unique flora of the Troodos region. Established in 2004 by the Department of Forests, the garden occupies a portion of the former Amiantos asbestos mine, which ceased operations in 1988. This transformation from an industrial site to a flourishing garden highlights the potential for ecological renewal and serves as an educational example of land rehabilitation. The garden is home to over 250 plant species, with plans to expand to over 500, each carefully curated and arranged into thematic sections. Key areas within the garden include the Endemic Plants section, showcasing the unique flora of the Troodos Mountains, and the Arboretum, featuring native and international trees and shrubs. The Riverine Vegetation area recreates a riparian habitat with an artificial stream and interconnected lakes. The Aromatic and Traditional Garden Plants section highlights plants used in Cypriot cooking and medicine. The Visitor Center offers exhibits, a documentary on Troodos flora, an electronic database of Cypriot flora, and a herbarium. Visitors can study plant specimens using stereoscopes and learn about the history of the Amiantos mine. The garden also participates in conservation efforts, including seed banking and habitat restoration.
