Discover more about Τεισιά της Παλιάς Χώρας (Walls of Old Chora)

The Walls of Old Chora, known locally as Τεισιά της Παλιάς Χώρας, are the ruins of makeshift fortifications built in 1571 AD during the final year of Venetian rule in Cyprus. As the Ottoman Empire loomed, a group of Venetian strategists erected these defenses in the Troodos Mountains. From their vantage point, they witnessed the fall of Nicosia (then known as Chora) and, overwhelmed by the Ottoman forces, chose to surrender. Today, the site offers visitors a serene experience amidst the weathered stones, with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. The less crowded area allows for peaceful contemplation of the island's rich history. The walls are situated on a slope, requiring a bit of a climb, but the vista from the top is rewarding. The site provides a unique encounter with the past and the natural beauty of Cyprus. Visitors are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes due to the uneven terrain and to visit in the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat.
