Mount Olympos (Chionistra): Cyprus’s Loftiest Alpine Haven

Mount Olympos, also known as Chionistra, dominates the central Troodos range as Cyprus’s highest elevation at 1,952 m. This rugged peak is a geological treasure—part of the famed Troodos ophiolite—where ancient igneous formations and serpentinite hold the island’s tectonic story in their rocky layers. In antiquity, it hosted a temple to Aphrodite Acraea on its promontories, adding mythic depth to its soaring presence. Etched among its slopes are dense coniferous forests, rare endemic species like the Cyprus mouflon and cedar, and dramatic wildflower blooms in spring. In winter, the terrain turns alpine, with modest ski runs—named after Greek deities—serving families and learners, crisscrossed by ski lifts and framed by snow-draped pines. The summit itself is cordoned off, owing to a British-operated radar installation, but nearby vantage points deliver sweeping panoramas across the Troodos range and even to the Mediterranean. Through the year, visitors can explore the Troodos National Forest Park’s trails—such as the Artemis and Atalante circuits—as seasons shift from snowy tranquility to vibrant green.
