Discover more about Κourion Ancient Amphitheater

The Kourion Ancient Amphitheater is a highlight of the Kourion Archaeological Site, one of the most significant ancient city-kingdoms in Cyprus. Constructed in the late 2nd century BC, the theater was expanded in the 2nd century AD to accommodate up to 3,500 spectators. Its design features a semicircular orchestra surrounded by seats carved into the hillside. Originally built for theatrical performances, the amphitheater was later modified in the early 3rd century AD to host wild animal fights, before reverting to its original purpose by the end of the century. Today, only the foundations of the scaenae frons (façade) remain. Excavations, which began in 1933, have revealed a wealth of historical information and allowed for ongoing restoration efforts. The theater's location on a cliff offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea, enhancing the visitor experience. The acoustics are renowned, making it a sought-after venue for modern cultural events, especially during the summer. Visitors can explore the tiered stone seating and imagine the ancient performances and gladiatorial contests that once took place here. The Kourion Amphitheater provides a tangible link to Cyprus's Hellenistic, Roman, and early Christian past.
