Kyrenia Mountains: A Natural Crown of Northern Cyprus

The Kyrenia Mountains, stretching 160 km (100 miles) along the northern coast of Cyprus, are a dominant feature of the landscape. Rising sharply from the Mesaoria plain, the range creates a natural barrier between the island's interior and the Mediterranean coast. The highest peak, Mount Selvili, reaches 1,024 m (3,360 ft). Geologically, the mountains are composed of sedimentary formations, primarily hard crystalline limestone and marble, pushed up by the collision of the African and Eurasian plates. This rugged terrain has historically served as a strategic location for watchtowers and castles, built by the Byzantines and Lusignans between the 10th and 15th centuries. The castles of St. Hilarion, Buffavento, and Kantara, perched atop peaks, were crucial during the Middle Ages. The mountains are covered in pine and cypress forests, with diverse flora including endemic species. Hiking trails wind through the range, offering stunning views and the chance to explore the natural beauty. The Besparmak Mountain Trail, also known as the Kyrenia Mountain Trail, stretches from Cape Korucam to the Karpas Peninsula. Other popular trails lead to the historic castles and offer varying levels of difficulty. Legends abound in the Kyrenia Mountains, particularly around the Pentadactylos (Five Fingers) peak. One story tells of a villager who, spurned by the queen, left his handprint on the mountain. The mountains also play a vital role in the region's water supply, with porous limestone filtering and preserving water in mountain aquifers.
