    Discover more about Buffavento Castle

Buffavento Castle, known as Buffavento Kalesi in Turkish, is a captivating historical site in Northern Cyprus. The name, meaning 'Defier of the Winds' in Italian, reflects its exposed location high in the Kyrenia Mountains. Standing at 955 meters (3,100 feet) above sea level, it's the highest and most inaccessible of the three castles in the region, offering breathtaking panoramic views.Originally built as a Byzantine watchtower in the 11th century to guard against Arab raids, the castle was later expanded by the Lusignans. Its strategic location allowed for communication via signals with the neighboring castles of St. Hilarion and Kantara, forming a protective axis along the coast. Over time, Buffavento served as a watchtower, a prison, and a strategic communication base. Richard the Lionheart captured it in the 12th century. The castle fell into disuse in the 14th century during the Venetian period.Today, visitors can explore the ruins of Buffavento Castle, which combine Byzantine and Frankish architectural elements. The climb to the castle is steep and requires a moderate level of fitness, involving approximately 600 steps. However, the effort is rewarded with stunning views of the Mesaoria plains, the northern coastline, and the Turkish mountains on a clear day. The castle itself features remnants of walls, towers, and a ruined chapel.
