Discover more about Constanza Bastion Moat

The Constanza Bastion Moat, located in the heart of Nicosia, Cyprus, offers a captivating blend of history and tranquility. This unique park, nestled within the city's well-preserved Venetian walls, provides a serene escape from the urban hustle. The Venetian Walls of Nicosia are a remarkable feat of 16th-century military engineering. Constructed during Venetian rule, these walls were designed by Italian military engineers Giulio Savorgnan and Francesco Barbaro to protect the city from Ottoman invasions. The walls stretch for approximately 5 kilometers and feature eleven heart-shaped bastions, each named after prominent Italian families who contributed to their construction. The Constanza Bastion is one of these impressive bastions, bearing witness to the city's rich and complex history. The bastion is named after the Constanza family, an aristocratic family from Messina. Over the centuries, the Constanza Bastion has witnessed numerous historical events. In 1570, the Ottomans stormed Nicosia through this very bastion. The first Ottoman to enter the city was a standard-bearer, who was quickly killed by the Venetians. In memory of this brave standard-bearer, the Turks erected a mosque on the bastion, named Bayraktar Mosque. The exact date of construction is unknown, but documents mention it as early as 1767. A minaret was added in 1820. Today, the Constanza Bastion Moat serves as a tranquil park, offering a respite from the city's frenetic pace. The moat, which once served as a defensive barrier, is now a green oasis, adorned with lush vegetation and carefully maintained paths. Visitors can enjoy leisurely strolls, take in the scenic views, and appreciate the historical backdrop of the bastion walls. The park is a popular spot for picnics, family outings, and quiet contemplation. Benches are strategically placed throughout the park, inviting visitors to sit and soak in the atmosphere.
