The Tower of Rigena, also known as Pyrgos tis Rigenas, is a historical landmark situated in Perivolia, near Cape Kiti in the Larnaca district. This medieval tower, dating back to the 15th and 16th centuries, served as a vital observation point and part of an early warning system to detect marine attacks. The tower's strategic location allowed guards to signal military administrations in Larnaca using lit torches. Constructed from hacked cubic limestone, the tower features a simple yet sturdy design with a square base and thick walls. Access was originally via a mobile ladder, enhancing security. Inside, a water tank ensured a fresh water supply for the guards. Over the centuries, the tower has been adapted for various purposes and witnessed numerous historical events. Local legends intertwine with the tower's history, with one tradition mentioning an underground tunnel used by Rigena (Queen). Another myth connects Rigena with the goddess Aphrodite, who admired Rigena bathing in the area's clean waters. The tower once displayed three Venetian coats of arms, with the central one featuring a flying Lion of Saint Mark, symbolizing the Venetian Democracy. The Tower of Rigena was designated as a protected monument in 1905, and restoration work began in 1911. Today, it stands as a testament to Cypriot history and resilience.
