Discover more about Makronissos Archaeological Site

The Makronissos Archaeological Site, located west of Ayia Napa, offers a captivating journey into Cyprus's Hellenistic and Roman past. This ancient necropolis, or burial ground, features 19 rock-cut tombs, a small sanctuary, and the remnants of an ancient quarry. The site is a testament to an ancient settlement that thrived in the area, with evidence suggesting its existence until the Early Christian period before being abandoned around the 7th century due to Arab raids. Excavations, funded by the Municipality of Ayia Napa, have revealed that the tombs were used during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The deceased were typically placed in clay sarcophagi, originally covered with three flat tiles. While many tombs were looted over the years, archaeological finds have provided valuable insights into the burial practices and cultural influences of the time. One of the surviving clay sarcophagi, along with some funeral gifts, is displayed at the Municipal Thalassa Museum of Ayia Napa. The architecture of the tombs is remarkably consistent, with each featuring a stairway leading to a rectangular entrance, a central opening, and benches along the sides. This uniformity suggests a lack of class differentiation in burial customs, although variations in funeral gifts and sarcophagi indicate some social distinctions. Near the tombs, visitors can explore the remains of a small sanctuary dating back to the Cypro-Classical and Hellenistic periods. This simple rectangular enclosure, constructed from irregular blocks, adds another layer to the site's historical significance. Today, the Makronissos Archaeological Site offers a unique blend of historical exploration and natural beauty, with its coastal location and intriguing remnants of ancient civilizations.
