Discover more about Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Arakas

The Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Arakas, also known as Panagia tou Araka, is a significant religious monument dating back to the 12th century. Located in the Pitsilia region, between the villages of Lagoudera and Saranti, the monastery's name may originate from the Arakas plant or the word 'ierakas' (falcon). The church's architecture features a one-aisled, domed structure with a cross-shaped roof, typical of Cypriot monastic design. A unique timber roof was added in the 14th century to protect the stone structure. The monastery's interior is adorned with exceptionally well-preserved frescoes, commissioned in December 1192 by Leon Afthentis. These frescoes are considered the most complete series from the Middle Byzantine period in Cyprus and showcase Comnenian-style art. The frescoes depict a rich array of biblical scenes and figures, including Christ Pantocrator in the dome and the Virgin Mary in the apse. The painter, believed to be Theodoros Apsevdis, masterfully used light and shadow to create depth and emotion. Over the centuries, the monastery experienced periods of decline, with only a few monks in residence by the 18th century. Today, only the two-story building on the north side of the church remains. In 1985, the Monastery of the Virgin Mary of Arakas, along with nine other painted churches in the Troodos Mountains, was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors can explore the church and admire the intricate frescoes, experiencing the serene atmosphere and rich history of this Byzantine treasure.
