Discover more about House of Dionysus

The House of Dionysus is a highlight of the Paphos Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site near Paphos Harbour. This Roman villa, constructed in the late 2nd century AD, showcases remarkably well-preserved mosaic floors that once adorned a luxurious residence. The villa was destroyed by earthquakes in the early 4th century AD. The villa spans 2,000 square meters, with a quarter of the area covered in intricate mosaics. These mosaics depict scenes from Greek mythology, particularly those associated with Dionysus, the god of wine, as well as hunting and vintage themes. The elaborate designs offer insight into the beliefs and daily life of the Roman elite in Paphos. Notable mosaics include depictions of Dionysus riding a panther, Dionysus and Acme, Ikarios and the shepherds, Poseidon and Amymone, and Pyramos and Thisbe. The entrance features a pebble mosaic of the sea monster Scylla, predating the villa and belonging to an earlier Hellenistic structure. The rooms are arranged around a central courtyard, or atrium, reflecting the architectural style of Hellenistic houses. Excavations in the 1960s revealed the villa and its stunning mosaics, which are now protected by wooden platforms allowing visitors to admire them up close. The House of Dionysus stands as a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Paphos during the Roman period.
