    Discover more about Kalopanayiotis

Kalopanayiotis, located in the Marathasa Valley on the northern slopes of the Troodos Mountains, is a captivating village steeped in history and natural beauty. Situated 70 km from both Nicosia and Limassol, it stands as the gateway to the Marathasa region. The village's history dates back to the 11th century, with its name possibly derived from the first resident, Panagiotis, who was known as a 'good Panagiotis'. However, the area has been known since ancient times, with evidence suggesting it was once home to a temple dedicated to Asclepius, the god of healing, due to the presence of sulfide mineral springs. These springs were part of the ancient Kingdom of Soli, where kings used the area as a wellness retreat. The Agios Ioannis Lampadistis Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1985, is a major attraction. This complex includes three churches dating back to the 11th century, adorned with well-preserved frescoes, icons, and wood carvings. The monastery also houses a Byzantine Museum with a collection of 15 icons discovered in 1998, dating back to the 16th century. Visitors can explore the village's traditional architecture, characterized by stone walls, wooden balconies, and tiled roofs. The village also boasts several other churches and chapels, including the Theoskepasti Chapel, Agios Andronikos Church, and Archangelos Michael Church, each with its own unique history and significance. Other attractions include a 16th-century Venetian bridge, the Kykkos Water Mill, and the Kalopanayiotis Cultural and Conference Centre. The village is also known for its natural spa, where visitors can enjoy the therapeutic benefits of the sulfur springs. Today, Kalopanayiotis is a model of sustainable tourism, offering a blend of sightseeing, nature, health, and tradition. Visitors can enjoy activities such as hiking, cycling, and fishing, as well as exploring the village's cobblestone streets and tasting traditional Cypriot cuisine.
