Avakas Gorge: A Natural Wonder

Hike through a stunning limestone gorge in Cyprus, with towering cliffs, unique flora, and a rewarding nature trail experience.

4.8

Avakas Gorge is a breathtaking natural wonder sculpted by the Avgas River over thousands of years. Located within the Pegeia State Forest on the Akamas Peninsula, near Paphos, Cyprus, the gorge offers a unique and rewarding experience for hikers and nature enthusiasts. The trail stretches approximately 3 kilometers (1.9 miles) one way, with a round trip of about 6 kilometers (3.7 miles). While the initial part of the hike is relatively accessible, the terrain becomes more challenging as you venture deeper into the gorge, requiring some scrambling over rocks and navigating narrow passages. Sturdy footwear is highly recommended. As you walk through the gorge, you'll be surrounded by towering limestone cliffs reaching up to 30 meters (98 feet) in height. These cliffs, composed of chalks, marls, and reef limestone, reveal layers of Earth's history dating back millions of years. The unique microclimate within the gorge supports a diverse range of plant species, including wild fig trees, oleanders, ferns, and the rare Akamas centaury, which is found nowhere else on Earth. Keep an eye out for local wildlife, such as birds, reptiles and perhaps even the elusive Cyprus mouflon. The best times to visit Avakas Gorge are during the spring and autumn months when the weather is mild and the flora is in full bloom. Be sure to bring plenty of water, wear sturdy hiking boots, and allow 2-3 hours to fully experience the beauty of this natural wonder.

Local tips

  • Wear sturdy hiking boots or trainers with good grip due to the rocky and potentially slippery terrain.
  • Bring plenty of water, especially during the warmer months, as there are no facilities along the trail.
  • Visit during spring or autumn for mild weather and blooming flora.
  • Be prepared to walk through shallow streams; waterproof shoes are recommended.
  • Check the weather forecast before you go, as the gorge can be prone to flash floods during heavy rains.
